A Journey with His Demons (Story)

His head dug into the desk, like a soldier in a trench. His demons haunted the walls of his mind. A constant buzzing of self-doubt simmered in his brain.

His breath grew heavier and his eyes caught specks of dust that drew moisture (or so he said).

His mates worried about him. He wasn’t his normal self. But no one cared to enquire. Lest they were wrong. Maybe it was nothing.

The bell rang and it was time to transfer classes. He resurrected himself from his bench and plodded onto his next chore. On his way there, he met his usual interruption: two boys bearing fearsome builds and troubled lives.

They noticed his shaky state and strained eyes and began their usual procedure: a shove against the wall, a push to the ground, a hearty set of chuckles and a few wholesome kicks to his ribs to culminate their satisfaction.

He considered himself special: chosen by the Universe to be the butt of Its jokes. He picked himself up and dusted himself off. The routine had numbed his care. But not as much as… The Incident: a carefully concocted series of events to spur him on… onto what he thought was his destiny: a comfy bed cushioned by the warmth of gravel and earth.

He got to class, perfectly late. Teacher was unusually generous. He let him in. A sigh of relief escaped his pursed lips. Maybe the day wasn’t going to be that bad after all. Maybe a few more events like these could light up some hope. Maybe.. trips and meets with the ground
…maybe he was just lost in fantasy. That fall wasn’t just a literal mess. He saw his life summarised in a flash: a sudden fall from a height of glee and contentment. How did it all come crashing down… so fast? Just… how?
