Quantity Over Quality? Here’s Why

Why You Should Focus on Quantity for Success

You’ve probably come across the phrase “quality over quantity”. But what if we turned the expression on its head? Can quantity ever be more important than quality? Well, I’d say yes! Here’s why.

One of the barriers to beginning any venture is quality and perfection. We want to be able to offer the best we can when we start, which is a great idea, but it falls flat because of the effect a lot of people face: paralysis. You wait and wait for that perfect moment to arrive when everything is perfectly planned out and you have the best content out there. But one thing we fail to realise is that that’s simply not going to happen for most of us.

One hit wonders rarely come around and you probably shouldn’t be laying your hopes in those. Instead, if you keep putting out content, with fair enough quality, you’re eventually going to hit gold with some of them. That, in turn, will shoot up your success.

This also applies to businesses. It’s going to be a bit difficult to compete with what’s already out there when you’re starting out. That’s why it’s important to get started as soon as you can so you get the necessary experience and knowledge to outdo the competition. As you put stuff out there, analyse the results and also rely on feedback from your audience/customers. Don’t forget to also learn and apply new things as you need them. That way, you’ll improve your content/product/service and be able to better serve your audience or customer base.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the audience/customer base doesn’t truly care about the work you put into what you put out. What they really care about is the result. And sometimes you can produce better results through less effort. For example, a Youtuber I follow, Roberto Blake (from whom I stumbled across this concept) says that sometimes the videos that he records with just his iPhone, unscripted, get him better responses than the higher quality, more edited uploads he puts out with his DSLR and microphone setup.

So instead of holding yourself back waiting to produce the best quality you can, maybe you should go ahead and just start. You probably have the minimum resources to start already and that may just be enough for now. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not bashing focus on quality. If you want, you can continue to focus on quality, but also put out stuff that requires less effort and hence can be released more regularly. This way, you’ll continuously keep your audience/customer base engaged and keep your personal or corporate brand on the tip of their tongues.

  1. Another good thing about quantity is that you learn a lot more from making a lot of good things than in the same amount of time making one incredibly good thing. So focusing on quantity can actually even lead to more quality than focusing on quality. 🙂
